Final Design :
A project inspired by memory, transition, and passage.
In this project, I took the opportunity to explore the connection between travel, transportation, and catharsis. When I leave home on an adventure, part of me understands that I will not be the same when I return. As I have ventured back by car and airplane from a many far flung destinations, I find myself writing, organizing my pictures, and pondering how the previous experience has changed my perspective and character. In constructing a 3D Travel Journal, I was inspired to reconsider various modes of transportation and how they connect with the ideas that transform our world-view.
Philosophical Approach :
By working in multiple dimensions, my ideas and expressions of memories can be adhered to the planes of the form and assembled as a 3D trip diary, which then also reflects the particular mode of transportation connected to this life-change. If a defining experience took place during a cross-country road trip, for example, I can stick pictures or writing on the model of a car, assemble the car, and place it on my desk, mantle, or end table as a reminder of the impact of that trip. To remember an experience that took place farther afield, I can put meaningful photographs, writing from my journal, or quotes on the wings, nose, or belly of a Boeing 747 foam core model, finding myself with a 3D representation of life experience.
This tangible representation of how memories are connected to transportation helps us 'bookend' the significant events of our lives.
